Sustainable Coastal Margins Program
The Sustainable Coastal Margins Program (SCMP, pronounced "scamp"; SCMP and "Vision 2020"; Summary, Objectives, and Background) was formed in November of 2000 by the action of the Provost and Vice President for Research of Texas A&M University. SCMP was chartered with a commitment to hire 14 SCMP Faculty and fund 15 SCMP Graduate Assistants, in the general area of sustainable development of coastal margins. The creation of SCMP resulted from the petition of a coalition of faculty and researchers from the Colleges of Geosciences, Architecture, Engineering, Agriculture and Life Science and the George Bush School for Government and Public Service to form a Team with interest in the general area of sustainability of coastal margins. All SCMP Faculty were hired by the end of 2004 and the assistanships awarded by 2005. There are five SCMP Research Focii included under SCMP.
The Team provides leadership to foster collaboration, partnering, and coordination to develop interdisciplinary research, offer joint degrees, share faculty appointments, create majors in environmental studies/sciences, develop highly competitive research proposals for state, federal, and private sector research dollars, and promote linkages to external organizations and programs with complimentary missions. The Team is committed to establishing Texas A&M University as a leader in research, education, service and outreach in support of the sustainable utilization of natural resources in coastal margins world-wide.
